Lesson 3: How does electricity transfer energy?
*Standards: 4.1.5
*Learning Target: I can explain how energy change form and how electricity changed to light and gives off heat.
Energy Changes Form
*Energy can be transform, or changed in form. Electrical, light, sound, thermal, kinetic, and potential energy. Electrical energy changes to light energy. Kinetic energy can change to sound or electrical energy.
*For example:
**A lamp changes electrical energy to light energy.
**Plunking a guitar string changes kinetic energy to sound energy.
**Wind turbine changes kinetic energy to electrical energy.
*Kinetic energy can change to thermal energy by rubbing your hands together quickly causing friction, which produces heat.
Resistors:
Resistors are items that transform electrical energy to heat and light energy. In light bulbs the resistor is filament. Filament is a thin coiled wire that lets items get hot without melting. Examples of objects that use a filament: light bulb, hair dryer, toaster, space heaters, and fish tank heaters.
